U21A Final Replay ends in defeat

posted 18 Jan 2015, 11:20 by Thomastown GAA News
After their injury time heroics a week earlier, Thomastown U21s were back in Nowlan Park to face Dicksboro in the Roinn A County Final replay on Sunday. An early morning flurry of snow didn’t prevent the match going ahead, with a 10am pitch inspection passing the ground fit for play.

Much like the drawn game, the opening exchanges were tight and Dicksboro held a one point lead after 15 minutes 0-4 to 0-3. In the 16th minute, Dicksboro were reduced to 14 men but it never seemed to knock them out of their stride. Points were exchanged over the next seven minutes to still leave the Boro with a point advantage 0-5 to 0-4. However, in a crazy final five minutes of the first half, Dicksboro scored 3-2 to Thomastown’s 0-1 to lead by eleven points at the break. Dicksboro 3-7 Thomastown 0-5.

With a mountain to climb, Thomastown needed to start the stronger but the game was put beyond reach by Dicksboro who banged in two more goals in the first 12 minutes. The game was over as a contest long before the final whistle blew. Final score Dicksboro 5-9 Thomastown 0-10.

Having come into the game with such high hopes, it was a tough defeat to take. It shouldn’t be forgotten however that this is a very young U21 team who had already created history by becoming the first team in the club’s history to win the Southern A Championship. To bring the Roinn A county final to a replay was a great achievement and although disappointed, the lads should hold their heads high. Well done to all the lads and to the mentors. Thanks again for the large support for the Town. Finally, congratulations to Dicksboro who were deserving champions.
